To sign up for a slot in the Spoken Word forum\, email Adrian Jones at adrian1914@hotmail.com. \n\n\n\n\nAsia Rainey is a multidisciplinary artist and writer with a resume spanning spoken word poetry\, music\, theatre\, visual arts\, and film. A native New Orleanian\, her work reflects the vivid vernacular\, southern rhythm\, and spirited culture of her birthplace. Known for writing with intense imagery and lyrical storytelling\, Ms. Rainey has been welcomed as a dynamic performer at numerous events\, festivals\, and educational institutions. Her work in the arts\, education\, and activism has received national and international acclaim\, from being named a 2017 Literary Arts Fellow for the State of Mississippi to serving as a U.S. arts delegate overseas. As an educator\, she has authored curricula for creative writing\, facilitating workshops for arts professionals\, academic teachers\, and audiences spanning generations. \nAt Link Centre\, she is part of our family and the creative mother of Sessions Open Mic\, which began when Asia was Artist-in-Residence here. We are thrilled to have her back at the mic on Friday\, June 10. \nShe will also conduct an afternoon writing workshop on Saturday\, June 11\, 3-5pm. The singer/harp player/guitarist/songwriter/producer signed to Malaco Records\, headquartered in nearby Jackson\, MS\, in 2013; his first full-length release with the legendary blues label was released the following year. His album\, Bootleg Whiskey\, named for the George Jackson song\, that is one of the album highlights\, established Champion as a torch carrier for authentic Mississippi blues.\n\n\nIn 2003\, Champion’s song\, co-written with Kevin Bowe\, entitled “Trust Yourself” was included on Etta James’ Let’s Roll album (2003)\, which won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album and a Blues Music Award as the Soul/Blues Album of the Year from the Blues Foundation in 2004.\n\n\nMore info at his website.
